What are payor modes?

A payor mode is a payment method. You will select your payor mode in your EcoCart dashboard. Once selected, you’re one step closer to being able to collect donations for your selected project and making your brand more sustainable.

What are my options?

So now that we know what payor modes are…what are your options? There’s quite a few, we’ll list them all below:

Customer paying: This payment model allows the customer to choose whether or not to make their order carbon neutral. There is no cost to the merchant, EcoCart will only collect a donation if the customer selects to make the donation.

Merchant Paying: This payment model allows the merchant to ensure that all orders placed are carbon neutral. There is no option for a customer to make the donation because the merchant is already covering that cost.

Hybrid

  • Customer matching: On this payment model the merchant would be making every order carbon neutral and the customer would have the option to match the merchants donation therefore making the order climate positive.

  • Merchant matching: On this payment model the customer would have the option to make their order carbon neutral. If they select to make the donation, the merchant would agree to match that donation, making the order climate positive.

Unchecked vs. Pre-checked?

So, you have decided which payor mode you would like to select but what's the difference between unchecked vs pre-checked?

Unchecked: The unchecked model is preset to have the toggle button set to off. A customer would need to click the toggle button on in order to opt-in to the donation.

Pre-checked: The pre-checked model is preset to have the toggle button turned on. A customer would need to click the toggle button off to opt-out of the donation.

This model has a higher adoption rate and we do recommend it as the preferred setting.

Flat Rate vs. Dynamic Calculation

Flat Rate: A flat rate must be requested through our support team before being able to push live. Typically we do recommend opting for the dynamic calculation model in order to keep the offset costs as accurate as possible. If you would like to request a flat rate estimate please contact our support team at support@ecocart.io with the following information:

  • Average units per order
  • Average weight per order
  • Most popular item
  • Fulfillment center address

Dynamic Calculation: Our robust algorithm calculates the carbon emissions from the manufacturing and shipping of each unique order. Our system considers variables such as raw materials, manufacturing process, product weight, shipping distance, and more. The amount that is calculated for each order will be listed on the widget at checkout as the donation fee. This amount will then be paired with one of the SKUs that has been added to your Shopify backend and will show up as an item in the customers cart.

Which should I pick?

Now that we know all about the different payment modes available, how do you decide which is right for you?

Low Cost, Low Commitment

If you are looking to utilize the EcoCart app as a free sustainable carbon offsetting method the best payor mode to select would be customer paying. This model ensures no additional costs to the merchant, EcoCart will only collect donations from the customer. This method will result in the lowest amount of carbon offsets due to the variability of customer adoption rates.

If you would like to make a bit bigger of an impact you can select the merchant matching hybrid payor mode model. This will allow you to match each donation that your customer opts-in to making. This will cost less than the merchant paying model that would make every order carbon neutral but will still allow you to have a higher brand impact than the customer paying model.

Being a Brand That Cares

If you are looking to ensure that your brand is actively fighting against climate change through carbon offsetting, one of the best payor modes to select would be merchant paying. This will ensure that all orders placed are carbon neutral through donation by the merchant.

Going Above and Beyond

To make the biggest brand impact and offset the most carbon, the best payor mode to go with would be the customer matching hybrid model. This model ensures that all orders placed are carbon neutral, and on top of that your customer will have the option to match your donation; therefore making a climate positive transaction.
